Ad Slicer for MySpace

Removes all the ads, and the space they leave behind.

Tired of all the annoying ads on MySpace? Need one simple script to remove them all? Then the Ad Slicer for MySpace is the solution you've been looking for.

Not only does it remove the ads, but it removes the space the ads leave behind, reclaiming all that juicy screen "realestate"!

[historical screenshot here]

And, it works everywhere, not just the top bar!

Compatibility

This script has been verified to work with Adblock Plus to help to further eliminate ads on MySpace. With Adblock Plus installed, this script will reclaim the space that Adblock leaves behind!

If you want a script that makes better use of your new screen realestate, check out MySpace - Add Image Links 2.

NOTE: All first time users please read!

This is a user script to be used in conjunction with a browser that supports it; such as Firefox with the Greasemonkey extension. PLEASE DO NOT SEND ME MAIL ASKING HOW TO GET THIS TO WORK ON YOUR PROFILE! That is not the purpose of this script.

Updates

UPDATE (9/19/08):
Fixed a few pagezaps, such as the message after adding to friends

UPDATE (9/19/08):
Fixed a pagezap in a view all friends page.
[Special thanks goes to Robert Reed for this update]

UPDATE (9/14/08):
Fixed the issue with some Photos on the individual view page being zapped.
[Special thanks goes to Tom Hurley for this update]

UPDATE (8/4/08):
Finally got around to this much-needed update. This version now reflects all the recent MySpace changes, including the new MySpace theme. Stripped out all the header and search bar modifications, as these have now become obsolete (and was causing 98% of the problems). Added in a few more exception cases into the whitelist. Set to target a few more ID's to zap, and cleaned up the code a great deal.

Thanks to all of you who have helped encourage me to push out this release. (You know who you are)

The code still seriously needs a major overhaul, and this release is rather more of a hack to get it working again. Also, the usefulness of this script seems rather obsolete now when using extensions such as AdBlock Plus, but there are still a few details here and there that this script does provide so I will be keeping it up due to popular demand.

MySpace poses as a potential problem for future versions of this script, as the (now) hackish nature of this script will eventually become its own demise as MySpace updates the layout of its ads. One of the biggest problems posed is that each page in MySpace is now handled by its own department, which means their naming layout is not nearly consistent from page to page, and there are no longer any definite patterns in ad generation that I am able to pick up on. This means that eventually more valid content will needlessly become zapped, and still many more ads may slip through the cracks. This is, unfortunately, inevitable.

UPDATE (3/6/08):
Minor update, major fix. This update should fix the issue with the searchbar not positioning correctly on the homepage.
[Special thanks to Robert V. for helping me to discover a new myspace ad function]

UPDATE (2/27/08):
Another fairly minor update, fixes whole page zaps on certain photo pages. Also updated the list of known valid script servers, to prevent future page zaps.

UPDATE (2/19/08):
Zapped a few new google ads throughout myspace that load statically (not through javascript or an iframe).

UPDATE (2/8/08):
First update in over 3 months. Seems about due... Just a few fixes for mail to keep good content from being zapped. Thanks MySpace! >;/
[Special thanks goes to Patrick Shawn Gallaher for this update]

UPDATE (11/7/07):
Zapped the annoying marketing image and its parent box on the homepage (New Skin), it seems to serve no real purpose and just takes up space. ZAPPED!

UPDATE (10/31/07):
Re-adjusted the search bar on picture pages (and maybe others?) to fit the User Shortcuts. Also, now properly removes the Google logo from "Classic"-themed pages (apparently MySpace had counteracted the previous method).

UPDATE (10/16/07):
Now the top bar is even slimmer than ever! Fixed all issues regarding the brand-new search bar, the New Home Skin, SignOut buttons, and more...

UPDATE (9/23/07):
Got extremely frustrated today, so decided to aggressively fight MySpace in this version. The result: This script should now work on almost any page perfectly, without leaving the page blank (if you should find a page that it does make blank please message me). Also fixed the search bar for good, by shrinking the text field. Plus fixes for MySpaceTV. This is now a complete update for version 1!

I have been using this script while viewing people's pics, and it works just fine. I do not notice any page zaps or missing pictures at all. If it is happening to you, please properly follow the instructions here and send me a message on MySpace. I do not even remotely frequent these comments here for bug reports of any kind. If it does appear to be a bug in the script code, I may need you to email me the source code of an affected page in order to assess the problem.

To make this work with the new myspace stuff, I added the following with the rest of the remove statements:

remove = document.getElementById('tkn_leaderboardDiv');
if (remove) destroy(remove);

This takes out the large ad at the top.

Then commented out the resizing stuff from line 96 through 129.

This seems to be quite sufficient for a quick fix, hopefully adrian will do a real update soon.

Please update this to make it work with the new MySpace layout. I barely use MySpace, but whenever I do, I get annoyed by the amount of ads there. Thanks.

I just fixed my annoyance that relates to the search bar on my homepage by using another script...Myspace Ad Remover 2.0

http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/3719

Changed the color code in that script to "001" to match the color of my page theme...see the results here...

I think the annoyance that Donyelle is referring to is the same thing with the search bar that I have a problem with when viewing my homepage....the search bar does not get moved to the very top of the page after the ad is removed...this script does remove the ads and I have adblock plus disabled on my homepage so other features are available....no other myspace scripts that I am running change it if they are enabled or disabled.....see the link.

Donyelle: This script doesn't affect any ads or the search bar that might appear on the splash page, mainly because of its erratic layout. If you must do a search on myspace without logging in, just go directly to the search page: http://search.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=...

The Search bar shows on the splash page.

This is great :) Yeah, was testing the issues with the chat like someone posted, but anyone who chats on myspace isn't the type of person who would likely utilize the script anyway.

Great job :) I'll probably write about this on my blog, http://www.nickjag.com , since it really helps marketers (not just users) to swift through the site without running into the annoying ads.

Although, I have to say (sadly lol) I used to enjoy the ads where you get to punch the monkey.

Awesome. But I found a problem on the myspace.com page (not the user home page) where the Home <-> Classifieds link bar jumps up and overlaps the search bar, search drop down and search button. Very weird looking.

@RC87
Although I doubt you'll read this any time soon, you could add the Myspace chat page url to the 'Excluded Pages' in that script's options under Manage User Scripts... That way the script always stays on.

Everytime I go into a group page, it comes up really weird. Like blank! All I see is the google thing, the navbar and the bottom links. Nothing but gray in between!

by the way this script (http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/3719) does whats yours does but without "erasing" the myspace chat page. So I have s substitute, but you still might want to fix that.

hey Adrian, your script is awesome. But one thing, it doesn't let people go to the myspace chatroom homepage. If you could do something about that, that would be great:). thanks.

Sorry for all of you who are having issues with this script. MySpace has been undergoing many nasty advertisement changes over the past few weeks, and I am waiting for it to become slightly more stable before making any major changes to the script.

Most problems end up fixing themselves after a day or two. If you have a problem with a certain page, then I suggest copying the url (up to the "mytoken" part) and adding it to the exclude list for the time being until the problem is resolved.

Some other known problems are:
It only works correctly with the US version of MySpace (on an international version, the link may cover up the signout link).
The new links on the top right of the top bar may cover up some search options.

If you see a problem that persists for over a week, please send me a message on MySpace.

haha indeed it is an ad.

However, add:

// @exclude http://www.myspace.com/

to the script so you can login again.

lol @ this blanking the entire myspace homepage... because the entire homepage is an ad.

You could comment on this script if you were logged in.
